As a veteran and the founder of a veteran-owned technology business, I am often asked what other entrepreneurs can do to honor the veterans in their Kansas City community and beyond. Veterans day has come to be a day to honor our veterans service to the nation. And, while that's very honorable and a dramatic change from the Vietnam years, there is still something missing from this day of respect.
It has to do with support of our veterans here and now.
Many veterans leave the service and have a hard time finding work because their war-time skills aren't easily translated into civilian work skills. As an employer, you can honor our nation’s veterans by making an active effort to hire them. As a small business owner, you can do your part by either hiring a veteran or seeking out and doing business with veteran-owned businesses.
Some veterans try to start their own businesses and often face a hard time with getting it going. There are many helpful veterans programs, but getting certified as a veteran-owned business is time-consuming, complicated and overwhelming when you are first starting out. If you know of a veteran-owned business please honor all veterans by actively supporting them. If they aren't publicizing the fact that they are veteran-owned, please make an effort to tell them that more people would support them if they knew.
I know first hand how difficult it is for veterans when they first leave the service. I founded Webb Technology Group after serving 6 years in the Army. What started out as part of my service to our country by building and designing websites for various Army units turned into a full-time job once I was a civilian. Over the years this business evolved from a single member developer to an entire office specializing in mobile application development, responsive website design, and social media management. As a way to honor our veterans today and all year long, we offer a military discount on all our services. Thank you for your service.
