Kansas City Holiday Traditions

It’s Christmas in Kansas City! One of the best things about living here are the Kansas City Holiday Traditions that we anticipate every year. We have the most amazing Christmas light displays and light shows spread across both states, yuletide celebrations, free holiday themed kid activities, one of the nation’s tallest Christmas trees, holiday train displays, ice skating and award winning holiday theatre productions. If you are looking to add some Kansas City Holiday Traditions to your life, this list is a great place to start.

Country Club Plaza - If you missed the 87th annual KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony this year, you can still enjoy the 15 blocks of holiday lights from 5pm-3am from now until mid January. And, while you are strolling through the Plaza, be sure to catch the Courtyard Caroling Monday-Saturday at 10am in each of the 5 courtyards or take a carriage ride to take in the sights. It is a magical time of year!

The City Market - If you fight the grinch off every year, you might feel at home at The City Market when it transforms itself for Whoville Holidays, a yuletide celebration featuring The Grinch, art activities and a Cindy Lou Who look-alike contest. Dress up as a Whoville character and visit the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who from 10 am-1:30 pm Dec 17-18 in the center of City Market Square. You can even bring your camera for a free holiday photo! And, if you find yourself there in the evening check out their TGIF (Thank Grinch It’s Friday) movie on Dec. 16th with entrance fees a suggested donation to Harvesters or a new toy for the Salvation Army.

Crown Center - There is so much to do here during the holidays! Check out the 100 foot Mayor’s Christmas tree (one of the nation’s tallest!) and light display, ice skate at the Crown Center Ice Terrace or watch the Rudolph Musical at The Coterie Theatre. You can visit Santa’s Gingerbread Station and get your photo with him, climb aboard the Crown Center Express Train Engine or listen to local choir performances while you shop. There is an endless supply of holiday cheer here!

Union Station - The holidays really come alive at Union Station. You can watch holiday movies for $3, join the Polar Express Pajama Party (in your PJ’s of course) followed by a mini trade ride (for the kids), visit the holiday train village, sit in awe at the stunning multi-media holiday light show at the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium or visit Science City for their Merry Science day of activities and hands-on learning and fun. It’s a magical environment in an architectural masterpiece!

Christmas in the Park - Another free option for family-friendly fun and new holiday traditions is the Christmas in the Park drive-thru display at Longview Lake Park that features over 300,000 lights and 175 animated displays. The winter wonderland is open daily through Dec. 31 from 5:30pm-11pm.
